Photo's 10 & 11 above are from Mr. Simon Shaws Grandfathers collection, and have been the subject of some considerable intrigue. They show
Field Marshall Montgomerey taking a Salute, with an armed escort in the
background. The escort is most visible in the right hand photo above, standing
just to the left of centre of the shot. However, a Mr. Hugh Williams has since suggested this may well have been at Copenhagen, where the surrendered German Cruisers "Prinz Eugen" and "Nurnberg" were awaiting "HMS Dido's" arrival before being escorted by her to Willemshaven. I have also now been informed by a Mr. Niels Casse that this event did take place at Copenhagen on 12th May 1945. The people wearing armbands were members of the Danish Resistance, and the "Open Topped car" belonged to the Danish King and it was used by Field Marshall Montgomery on a tour around the Danish Capital. This should now put an end to any further speculation about these photo's. If you have any
other comments, or know of anyone who was there to witness this event, |
