6 above centre shows her action damage from her engagement with the German "Graf
Spee" off the River Plate in December 1939. Photo's 5, 6, & 7 above are courtesy of Mr. Paul Simpson & Mr. Ian Mort. Ians father, Mr Archie Mort, served on HMS Exeter and was captured by the Japanese after she was sunk in action in the "Java Sea" on March 1st. 1942. Like many thousands of others, Archie suffered dreadfully at their hands as a POW. Luckily, he survived their brutality ! |
